Tim Berne’s Snakeoil has been recognized as one of the most inventive and adventurous groups on the modern jazz landscape, hailed by The Guardian as “an object lesson in balancing composition, improvisation and the tonal resources of an acoustic band.” Saxophonist/composer Berne has founded any number of jaw-dropping bands over the years – think Bloodcount, Science Friction, Big Satan and Paraphrase, among others – but Snakeoil brings together a uniquely impressive roster of artists: Berne, pianist Matt Mitchell, clarinetist Oscar Noriega and drummer Ches Smith. Together, the quartet explores and illuminates compositions that rank among the most daring and complex but also thrilling and accessible of Berne’s career. This special performance marks the celebration of their latest recording, “Incidentals,” on ECM Records.
